Oscar Nom Noms!

Oscar season is officially here. Christmas has passed, the 2013 has begun and New Years resolutions are already struggling to stay afloat though none of if matters, not now. Though flawed, the Oscars have officially arrived by way of announcing the nominees.

I enjoy this “season” immensely since I am that guy who enjoys trying to watch all the nominated movies, that hosts epic Oscar parties complete with ballots and costumes and who, in general, just finds the whole shebang fun. And even though I don’t agree with every winner, especially Brokeback Mountain losing out to Crash, all is mostly forgiven with promise anew. Past crimes can be hard to forget but hope springs eternal and I am but babbling brook.

I cannot, at this time, make my personal predictions since I have yet to see a few key films like Lincoln, Les Miserables, The Master or Amour, but I aim to rectify tahat soon. The personal game of trying to watch all, or as many, films as possible before the big night is difficult but therein also lies the build-up, the fun.

It should be noted that this as-many-films-as-possible Best Picture nomination strategy is the biggest fraud of the new age Oscars, discounting of course the too long awards show itself. If the Academy’s aim is to increase the variety of films nominated for their top prize, where then are films like The Dark Knight Rises, Looper or Skyfall? The fraud continues, as does the ruse that best picture nominee that doesn’t also have its director nominated can win. So sad.

And yet, the true thrill is on game day. Like watching a Super Bowl where there are not one but many victors, the Oscars are magical. The 85th edition, like the 84 before it, hold the promise of surprise, film-making respect and long-lasting impact, I’m looking at you The Artist. Check out the full list of nominees, courtesy of Yahoo, below. You’ll notice that I have oranged in my “oh my goodness” snubs and “how are they nominated” rubs, both of which I would love to hear your thoughts and reactions(!).

Anyway, agree or disagree, the fun begins now so start formulating your predictions and embrace the season! Oh, and click here to see the 2013 Razzie Nominations. Suck it Twilight!
